SSG are proud to announce our latest launch with Nicola Puttock – the proud owner of the creative consultancy Graphein Recruitment. 

It is always a pleasure to speak with Nicola with her boundless enthusiasm, here is her story so far:

What was your motivation for starting your own recruitment business?

Starting my own business like others, has always been something of a 'dream'.  I'm proud of my career choice to be a recruitment consultant, I take pride in my work, building relationships with clients and candidates and ensuring the process is seamless for both.  I started out as a 'wet behind the ear's' consultant, through hard work, dedication I progressed through the ranks and my last position was an Associate Director.  Due to personal life changes, ambition and of course opportunity, I set up Graphein Recruitment.

Tell me about your recruitment background.

Having been in recruitment for more than a decade I have had the opportunity to work for both independent, start-up and global recruitment consultancies.  Starting out in IT/Technical recruitment resourcing C/C++ developers and programmers, and across general technical support 1st/2nd and 3rd line and NOC. My later years my experience evolved from backend developers through to front end developers, design and creatives across all industry sectors.

What sectors do you cover?  What roles do you specialise in?

Specialising in Design, Creative and Digital across all industry sectors. Typical opportunities would be Junior to Senior, and Head of and Director levels. 

  • Artworkers / Creative Artworkers
  • Graphic / Conceptual / Creative Designers, Managers and Directors
  • Digital / UX / UI Designers
  • Copywriters / Proof readers / Content editors (print/web) / Scriptwriters
  • Front End and Back End Developers
  • Social Media – SEO / PPC / eCommerce

What can customers expect when they work with you?

Customers/Clients will have someone who is thorough, to the point like I said on my website 'Let's cut out the Blah, blah, blah' I'm not here to say how great I am and that I can offer anything different from any other recruitment agency when it comes to advertising opportunities, and the amount of job boards which I use etc.  What I do want to know is about their business, company culture, working environments!

How can a consultant market their business to potential applicants and have an understanding if that applicant will potentially fit with their ethos and teams if you only have job description? 

I work with applicants in the same way tell me everything! Your motivations, why you are seeking a change etc. Having the opportunity to meet with candidates and clients is a real insight for me to understanding both party’s motivations to hire or to progress their career. They will expect to build a working relationship, someone who they will use again and again, as the process will be seamless as long as we are working 'Together'.

What are your long term plans for the company?

I have not set any concrete long term plans at this stage, and we shall see what happens in the future…
