The Launch of James Rhodes Exec Search

by Matt Woodhouse / Tuesday 3rd october 2017

Arlo James Recruitment launches with SSG

SSG caught up with James Rhodes - the founder of James Rhodes Exec Search, another business that SSG has helped to launch.

Tell me about your recruitment background?

Started in industrial recruitment after University. I applied to around 20 recruitment companies for a trainee recruiter role but only received a response from a very small handful. The responses that I received were that I didn’t have any ‘sales’ experience! With that in mind, I went and got a self-employed job selling gas and electricity door to door for 5-6 months over the summer period.

I then went and re-applied to a few companies and secured a role with a company that specialised in industrial recruitment. I worked in industrial for about 3 years then relocated to London where I secured a role with Salmons Pensions, who specialise in recruiting across the pensions market.
Following 2.5 years’ working there and in The City I relocated back to Leeds (I missed my family and friends!). I secured a role with Charter House Recruitment and specialised in recruiting for fully qualified in-house accountants.
Following there I moved to BWD Search & Selection, where I worked for over 10 years, and specialised in recruiting across the Wealth management market.

What was your motivation for starting your own recruitment business?

After a while, I started feeling a bit stagnant at BWD and felt that I had lost a bit of my spark for the job. I seemed to have also hit a bit of a ceiling in terms of my earnings and achieving the next level within the business. I never wanted to join a competitor as felt that BWD were a good place to work and did things the ‘right’ way and if it wasn’t going to work there it wasn’t going to work for someone else.

I liked the idea of taking everything that I learned at BWD and putting my own spin/ take on it and effectively doing it for me. I also wanted more work-life balance and to see more of my wife and young sons. Going forward I want to build a business that I can be proud of and further enhance my reputation in the industry.

What sectors do you cover?

The Wealth Management market

What roles do you specialise in?

Financial Planning/ IFA, Private Banking & Investment Management and the appropriate support roles across the UK.

What can customers expect when they work with you?

James Rhodes Exec Search is a relationship driven business and the focus will be developing strong relationships with candidates and clients.
I want to focus more on recruiting for SME businesses where I can work more closely with the owners of the business, which will allow me to gain a deeper understanding of their business. This will ultimately allow me to better promote their business to potential new hires. I feel strongly that if you are not passionate about a business you are trying to recruit for then you are not going to go to market with the right message or do a good enough job.

I’m not looking to re-invent the recruitment wheel, but I’m passionate about doing the right thing and working hard for anyone that I work with.
One of my mantras is, ‘We are specialists for a reason; if you commit to us, we’ll commit to you’…. I have 10 years+ experience recruiting in the Wealth management market so I’m pretty well connected and knowledgeable within the industry. If a client or candidate is willing to commit to me (preferably on an exclusive or retained basis) then they will get my full commitment in return.

What are your long-term plans for the company?

  • The 1st 3 years are to get up to achieving consistent 6 figure billings each year asap
  • The 10-year plan is to be able to pay off our mortgage
  • I don’t have any plans to grow the business in terms of employees (not yet anyway!)
