Following on theme of catching up with recruiters who have recently launched their own recruitment business with SSG, we look at Mark Hunt’s story and how he came to “be his own boss” with H9 Technical.

Mark left university with a mountain of student debt (like almost all Uni leavers) and wasn’t sure what came next. In Mark’s own words – he stumbled into recruitment. Luckily for Mark (and us) he found himself working in recruitment for Huxley Engineering in Manchester at an office that was doing fantastically well at the time. It wasn’t long before Mark was flying in the office, and then being flown to Athens on a work reward trip. This was the point when Mark realised he’d been bitten by the recruitment bug and he liked it.

Over the years Mark has worked for two large multi-national recruitment firms developing a wealth of industry knowledge in very specialist technical recruitment. Although Mark admits he is not the best sales person in the world – he knows the industry inside out, which allows him to provide a fully consultative approach which his clients really appreciate.

Whilst working for these large firms was great – having some excellent benefits, Mark never really felt comfortable with the “one size fits all” approach to dealing with clients. Mark wanted to be able to tailor a service to best suit his client’s needs and to be able to build sustainable long term relationships with clients. Mark wanted to act like a genuine consultant, with a genuine interest in this highly specialist field.

And so, H9 Technical was born, a company whose clients can expect to work with a real market expert who speaks their language. The beauty of Mark “being his own boss” means there is no hidden agenda with H9 Technical, his focus is to help both clients and candidates navigate their way through the complex (and sometimes daunting) recruitment process.

Mark’s aim is to provide a ‘turnkey’ solution to recruitment and provide coverage of the full spectrum of roles which may arise throughout the lifecycle of your average business in these sectors, from Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning through to Operations/ Maintenance and Facilities Management. As you can imagine the kind of roles H9 Technical cover are varied but core disciplines include Site/ Construction Management, HSE, Quality, Design Engineering, Project Management, Planners, Quantity Surveyors, Commissioning and Operations Management to name a few.

So what does the future look like for Mark and H9 Technical? You will have already seen the projects he’ll be working around – it’s all the big ones (really really big ones actually!), nuclear reactors, HS2, Trident Submarines to name a few. The future looks bright – hopefully very bright as some of the clients and candidates Mark will have will being the ones keeping the lights on!
