What does it take to start your own recruitment business?

What motivates those entrepreneurial recruiters to start up their own recruitment agency?  And what unique perspective do they bring to the market?  We sat down with Mark Gale-Jones of freshly launched Puretek Recruitment to find out just that.

Mark began his recruitment career working the Further Education sector, recruiting for Apprentice Engineers working for local companies.  Somewhat a baptism of fire, the role challenged Mark to quickly develop his skills to encourage apprentices to open up when interviewing them. 

From there, Mark’s journey took him to contract and perm engineering recruitment for a national agency, who had opened a new office in Cambridge.  The challenge for Mark here was starting a desk from scratch with no CRM database.

The next step in Mark’s career was moving from Cambridge to a small boutique medical sales and commercial agency that had been trading over 35 years, again starting an engineering desk from scratch but within the medical and scientific sector, bringing a new perspective to many clients who were unaware the business could recruit within the engineering sector. 

Eventually Mark reached that point that many of us do, where he felt he had progressed as far as possible within the business, so moved back to a High Street agency to build an engineering desk for them.

With such a strong and varied experience, what prompted Mark to start his own recruitment business?  “Put simply, the opportunity to be my own boss and earn money for myself, not for someone else, was a big motivator”, says Mark.  That, paired with the conviction that his new business could fill gaps that Mark had identified in the market meant that Mark hardly hesitated to make the leap from fed-up employee to entrepreneurial recruitment business owner.   

Puretek Recruitment was launched in July 2016 and specialises in the Engineering (manufacturing, medical, field service and managerial roles), Technical (electrical, electronic, design and mechanical roles) and Civil Engineering (estimators, bid managers, proposal engineers and Quantity Surveyor roles) sectors.  Puretek Recruitment particularly specialises in field service engineers, quality engineers and senior level/management roles. 

Whilst speaking to Mark, we were keen to understand what his customers (both clients and candidates) can expect.  “Our ethos is absolute integrity”, says Mark.  “Puretek customers will receive an honest and reliable service.”  What does this really mean?  Well, for clients it means Puretek are not an agency that will throw loads of CVs at a client and hope that one will stick. All candidates are thoroughly screened and Mark takes the time to get to know them; understanding what their wants, motivations and long term plans are. Clients receive a 360-degree service and Puretek take the pain out of the recruitment process.

The 360-degree service means Puretek will do whatever the client requires of them to support them in their long term recruitment strategy, taking the time to understand every client’s needs and ensuring they become an integral part of their recruitment goals.

Clients receive a service from a company that has been founded on strong morals.

And what about candidates?

Jobseekers can be assured that Puretek has their best interest at heart – never will a candidate be pressured into agreeing to their CV being submitted for a role their heart just isn’t in.  Nor will they be on the receiving end of the ‘glossy’ job description or company profile – Puretek pride themselves on being honest and transparent with all of their candidates.

What does the future hold for Puretek?  Mark has a clear plan: “To grow in staff numbers; to take on talented consultants who believe in the moral ethics of recruitment and to establish the brand as a ‘go to’ business for the recruitment of quality engineering, technical and civil engineering staff.”  And we get the feeling nothing less will do for this ambitious and driven recruiter.  We’re really excited to be part of this growing company and we’re confident that Mark will take Puretek from strength to strength over the coming years.
