SSG are delighted to announce the launch of Peter Walker’s new recruitment business. We’ve worked with Peter to help him with his recruitment start-up, and we’ll be supporting him on an ongoing basis. To celebrate to launch of his new business, we spent some time with Peter and asked him to tell us a little bit more about his journey in the recruitment industry up to this point.
Tell me about your recruitment background
I’ve spent more than 11 years employed within one of the North of England’s leading independent Construction Recruitment Businesses, progressing from Trainee to Director level. I suppose it’s quite rare these days for a recruiter (or anyone for that matter) to work for one organisation for over a decade, but thankfully I’ve worked with some fantastic people who I’ve learnt a great deal from during that period. Most importantly though, I still have that same drive to deliver consistent results for my customers as I did when I started in the industry many moons ago.
My roles have been varied during my career to date and I’ve been fortunate enough to have been given the opportunity to build 3 separate divisions, as well as launch and establish a thriving North East Regional office, which has gone on to become the most profitable within the business for the past 3 years on the bounce. Naturally, this an achievement both I and my former colleagues are incredibly proud of!
As a recruiter, my business development skills and industry knowledge are certainly my strongest assets and I’m the kind of person who is always seeking out new opportunities. I need to keep myself challenged!
What was your motivation for starting your own recruitment business?
Honestly, I think I had just ran out of justifiable excuses not to do it. Starting my own recruitment business had been an idea that had been niggling away in my mind for the past 18 months or so, but there was always a ‘what if’ moment that stopped me taking any real action. It came to a point where the pros just far outweighed the cons. Now is the right time though, as you’re only ready, when you’re ready!
I don’t think it will come as surprise to most of my network or any experienced recruiter as to the professional motivations behind starting my own business.
Having the opportunity to build my own asset was key driver, but also looking to add genuine and tangible value to my network. Exclusive business has always been very important to me and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that to gain and retain exclusive business, you need to work strategically and consultatively with your network. This is where I see the future of Brownlee Dean and the future of recruitment in general. It’s not enough to just be a job filler these days.
What sectors do you cover? What roles do you specialise in?
Brownlee Dean offers permanent, retained and temporary staffing solutions within the Construction, Civil Engineering and Energy sectors. Our area expertise lies in recruiting production and commercial biased technical staff for both regional SME’s and National Tier 1 Contractors.
As a business we’re incredibly project focused and over the past 7 years I’ve personally recruited staff into some of the UKs largest infrastructure projects, many of which have been a 3 + year commitment from pre-construction stage, right the way through to final handover.
It can be challenging recruiting for these type of projects, but it’s also hugely rewarding when you see these multi-million schemes go live knowing that you’ve play some small part in making that happen.
Please feel free to check out our website for a more comprehensive list of roles we regularly recruit for and specialise in.
What can customers expect when they work with you?
Probably most importantly, we listen to you! It’s not an easy skill to master and many recruiters don’t do it very well. Admittedly, it’s easier said than done at times, but I try to listen first and then advise. After all, you know your wants and needs better than I do.
Other things customers can expect from Brownlee Dean are passion (I’m a passionate, vibrant kind of person and love what I do), industry knowledge/credibility and a consultative approach.
I’m certainly not a subservient recruiter and I feel it’s important to work in partnerships with our customers. Anyone who buy into this philosophy will get always get my 100% commitment.
Finally, having spent so long working in the sectors I specialise in, I’m happy to share any knowledge on up and coming projects, or market trends to any customer who’s interested. I feel sharing knowledge is almost always mutually beneficial.
What are your long-term plans for the company?
No, I certainly don’t want to run before I can walk, but I would like to see steady growth over the next 3 to 5 years, with an expansion of the business into several overseas markets.
I believe preserving the values of credibility, passion, proficiency and working in partnership our customers will be key to the future success of the business. Practice what we preach, and the balance sheet should look after itself!
We’d like to thank Peter for sharing his experiences with us, and we look forward to working closely with him as he continues to build on his vision.
